Summary: This volume brings together the results of historical research and scientific surveys conducted over a period of twenty years, on the building itself and on Giotto’s wall paintings, as well as their environment and surroundings. A series of preliminary reports, coordinated by the Central Institute for Restoration, was presented in 1982 in a special supplement to the Bollettino d’Arte (published by the Ministry for the Cultural Heritage) entitled “Giotto a Padova”. The contents of this volume are therefore the result of pioneering and experimental work that should become the norm for other projects following the same path. The first part includes survey reports on geognostic, structural, mineralogical, thermo-visual, ultrasound and microclimatic matters, as well as pollution and airborne dust, dampness and humidity in their various forms, and surface temperature. In addition, there are reports on surveys to detect and confine areas affected by saline efflorescence and sulphation (by means of XRF techniques), as well as investigations into the composition of pigments and other materials used by Giotto, not to mention the fixatives and synthetic enhancing agents used during previous restoration work in the period 1958-1963. The second part deals with the implementation of the project for restoring Giotto’s paintings. This is followed by two other important sections, one concerning recovery and restoration techniques, the other regarding observations and conclusions reached during the work, as an aid to a fuller understanding of the Chapel. These parts contain reports on the actions undertaken to make the internal environment suitable for the preservation of the wall paintings (ranging from double-glazing the windows to installing the “microclimate control unit” CTA, a sort of “artificial lung” between the inside and the outside of the building), as well as the preservation and restoration operations which have been carried out during the last ten years not only on the building and the wall paintings, but also on other items contained in the Chapel (including the statues by Giovanni Pisano, as well as the statue of Enrico Scrovegni at prayer and his funeral monument), comparing the results with the aims set out in the restoration project. The final part takes the form of information, largely unpublished, regarding previous restoration work on the Chapel and its decorations. This subject is treated in more detail in the proceedings of the international conference “Giotto e la Cappella Scrovegni dopo i recenti restauri”, starting with an analysis of Giotto’s painting technique.
