Summary: Siena’s contrade are usually famous for their role in the Palio, yet here for the first time and by using their rich collection of previously unexplored archival material, they are considered as a self-organized urban system. In other towns urban associations tend to disappear in time while Siena’s contrade have continued without interruption until today: this volume analyses their long existence from various perspectives, covering a period from the 16th century to the present day.
