Summary: Ceramics by Henry van de Velde were known as early as 1895. Prior to his relocation from Berlin to Weimar in early 1902, he produced designs for the stoneware manufacturers of the Westerwald; these designs were allocated to select workshops through the Montabaur district administration. In Weimar ceramics rose to a significant field of activity for the artist. In his new capacity as ?adviser for industry and applied arts“ in the Grand Duchy of Saxony-Weimar, he visited potteries in nearby Bürgel as well as porcelain manufacturers in Ilmenau and Jena-Burgau. He encouraged a revival among these manufacturers by refining their products stylistically and even releasing his own designs for production. Furthermore, in 1903 he started designing several models of luxury tableware for the Königlich-Sächsische Porzellan-Manufaktur in Meißen. Detailed information on dimensions, materials, and techniques of manufacture and extensive documentation make this volume an incomparable standard work. The main part of the book is supplemented by indices of manufacturers and artistic suppliers, historical exhibitions, and van de Velde’s clients, as well as a detailed index of markings.
