Description: Co-ordination and contributions by Jacopo Curzietti and Immacolata Agnoli. Roma: Ugo Bozzi, 2010. 24cm., hardcover, 579pp. 2nd edition, revised and expanded. Summary: Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio: Documents, Sources and Inventories 1513-1875 is the second revised, up-dated and enlarged edition of Caravaggio documents first collected and collated by Stefania Macioce and published by Ugo Bozzi Editore in 2003. The present edition is made possible by the collaboration of the 'Comitato Nazionale Caravaggio' and the scholarly contributions of Jacopo Curzietti and Immacolata Agnoli. The volume opens with two introductory essays: one by Maurizio Calvesi the other by the book's author Stefania Macioce. Three documentary sections follow, permitting the reader to trace the artistic production and historic events of Caravaggio's life. The first section is composed of 1100 archival documents (as compared to the 700 records collated in the first edition). These span the earliest references to the Merisi family in the mid-sixteenth century, to the last records concerning the history of individual paintings in the mid-nineteenth century. The second section is composed of transcriptions of the most important biographic records and descriptions of the artists work. Presented chronologically they encompass the writings of the artist's first seventeenth century biographers, through to the critical appreciations of his work in the mid-nineteenth century. In the third section, a close reading of seventeenth and eighteenth century inventories of notable Roman and European collections allows us to trace the individual history of every Caravaggio painting. The volume closes with a substantial bibliography, arranged chronologically and fully up-dated to 2009 and a comprehensive index of names. ^Currently in reprint^.
