Item Number: 105848 Title: Palazzo Montecitorio : The Art Nouveau Building Author: Portoghesi, Paolo ; Renata Cristina Mazzantini (eds) Price: Not Available ISBN: 9788837072902 Description: Milan: Electa, 2009. 28cm., pbk., 184pp. with numerous color photos. English text. Summary: The second of two books devoted to Palazzo di Montecitorio focuses on its more recent history, which is closely linked to the Italian Parliament. In his designs for the interior, Ernesto Basile used his taste as a designer rather than an architect, achieving an overall result in which the solemnity of the rooms blends perfectly with the lightness of the decoration and the detail. Examples of this are the debating chambers, the polychrome marble floors, the ceilings and the furnishings, all of which Basile supervised in detail, according to the vogue of the period. Other artists who collaborated with Basile were key exponents of the celebratory taste of the period: Leonardo Bistolfi and Domenico Trentacoste, who executed the marble statues and the rear facade, and Aristide Sartorio, who painted the huge pictorial frieze depicting the history of the 'Italian People' that runs all round the top of the Chamber, just below the airy Art-Nouveau glass-and-iron velarium by Giovanni Beltrami.
