Item Number: 109723 Title: RAPHAEL's Sistine Madonna Author: Henning, Andreas Price: Not Available ISBN: 9783422070349 Description: Hrsg. Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden. München: Deutscher Kunstverlag, 2011. 24cm., pbk., 80pp., 46 color, 9 b&w illus. English edition. Summary: Raphael’s Sistine Madonna is one of the best known paintings in the world. The book pursues the history of the painting from its creation to the present – including the two famous little angels depicted in both kitsch and art. Great varieties of illustrations, as well as those from the restoration workshop, grant unique insights into the painting’s eventful history. Raphael’s Sistine Madonna is just as well-known as Leonardo’s Mona Lisa. Moreover, the two little angels, who lounge so agreeably at the lower edge of the image, can be found in reproductions around the globe. Nevertheless, the fame that surrounds Raphael’s painting today was not self-evident. The book pursues the history of the painting from its creation to the present. Likely commissioned by the pope, Raphael created the altarpiece around 1512–13. It subsequently hung in a monastic church in Northern Italy for 250 years, nearly unnoticed. Its actual discovery first began with the acquisition of the painting by August III and its complicated purchase negotiations, which often threatened to fail. The myths surrounding the painting are also examined. Around 1800, representatives of Romanticism laid the cornerstone for the work’s popularity. Simultaneously, the little angels developed an independent existence, which has led through all the highs and lows of good taste.
