The installation Intolerance confronts a group of paintings by 17th century Dutch artist Melchior d’Hondecoeter with a group of pre-1900 ceremonial feathered objects from Hawaii. The publication consists of three volumes: Intolerance [Ger./Engl.] documents the installation as it was shown at the Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin. Melchior d’Hondecoeter (1636–1695) [Engl.] is the first comprehensive publication on the work of this artist. Hawaiian Featherwork [Engl.] is a catalogue raisonné of all known pre-1900 Hawaiian feathered-god images, helmets, capes and cloaks. With almost 400 colour images and five scholarly texts, this publication gives insight in Willem de Rooij’s work, and at the same time provides a basis for further research.
