Item Number: 110846 Title: Elfenbein - Barocke Pracht am Wiener Hof Author: Bückling, Maraike ; Sabine Haag Price: Not Available ISBN: 9783865686398 Description: Petersberg: Imhof, 2011. 30cm., pbk., 256p., 262 color illus. Exhibition held at Liebieghaus, Frankurt. Summary: Since antiquity, ivory has been one of the most popular materials known to mankind. Rarity as well as its origins in strange and faraway lands account for its costliness. The Baroque era had a particularly high demand for ivory. Indeed, it was in Vienna during the reigns of Prince Karl Eusebius von Liechtenstein (1627–1684) and Emperor Leopold I (1658–1705) that ivory work reached its culmination. The imperial residence itself became the most prominent centre for the art of ivory carving. The shimmering appearance of the polished material served the princely-imperial claim to prestige, was the ruler’s property as well as proof of his power and wealth. The exhibition at the Liebieghaus will focus on this heyday of ivory art, featuring splendid, virtuoso carvings in cooperation with the Kunstkammer of the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna. The statuettes, pitchers, goblets, tankards and bowls of ivory – objects of high artistic value created for display in so-called chambers of art and curiosities – are impressive testimonies to the craftsmen’s skill. The show will present works by the most famous ivory artists of the Baroque, for example Adam Lenckhardt, Johann Caspar Schenck and Matthias Steinl.
