Item Number: 113512 Title: VERMEER, Lairesse and Composition Author: Taylor, Paul Price: Not Available ISBN: 97890400077081 Description: Zwolle: Waanders, 2011. 24cm., pbk., 32pp. illus. English text. Summary: The RKD aims with the Hofstede de Groot lectures to spotlight art historians who have conducted pioneering research on Dutch art. The Hofstede de Groot lecture is named after the art historian Cornelis Hofstede de Groot (1863–1930), whose extensive art-historical documentation forms the basis of the RKD collection. This publication is released in the series Hofstede de Groot lectures by the RKD (Netherlands Institute for Art History), The Hague and Waanders Publishers, Zwolle. Three and a half centuries ago Johannes Vermeer made what must have been a difficult decision. He had been working, probably for some months, on the picture known as The Milkmaid. On the ground behind the maid he had depicted a basket full of clothes, and he had added the highlights on the handle as well as the colours of the clothes themselves. But then, for some reason, he seems to have decided the basket was not in keeping with the rest of the picture: and he painted it over, replacing it with a small footwarmer, a row of tiles and an extended area of wall and floor. X-rays and infrared reflectograms allow us to see that Vermeer took this decision, but they do not allow us to ask the more interesting question, of why he took it. The latter question of course cannot be answered with certainty, but a number of art historians have made speculations about why Vermeer erased the laundry basket.
