Item Number: 114478 Title: La dea rivelata Author: Capodiferro, Alessandra ; Paola Quaranta Price: Not Available ISBN: 9788837075972 Description: Milano: Electa, 2011. 23cm., hardcover, 126pp. illus. Text in Italian. Summary: In 2009, the Rome Soprintendenza Speciale per i Beni Archeologici (Special Superintendency for the Archeological Heritage) conducted archeological excavations, thanks to the collaboration of Atac S.p.A., in Via Marmorata, in Rome. Just under the road surface, they brought to light some extraordinary finds, including the impressive remains of some buildings dating from the Trajan era, a Late Roman paved road and evidence of numerous minor roads laid continuously on top of each other from the Roman Imperial period to the present day. In one of the levels of a room of Trajan date, they found the splendid head of a female goddess which, like other marble artifacts found in the same trench, was possibly put there deliberately to prevent it from being destroyed. The head, known as an Artemis of the Efesia type, was found face-up only 40 cm beneath the tramlines, together with ancient building rubble and fragments of amphoras. Volume 1 presents the main piece resulting from the excavation, a magnificent head of the goddess Artemis, now being exhibited at Palazzo Altemps in Rome.
