Summary: The Belvedere in Vienna will be holding a comprehensive special exhibition on the subject of gold in spring 2012. The main focus is on the application of this precious metal in contemporary art. Twentieth- and twenty-first-century exhibits are shown alongside Gothic altars and pictures from the Secession. The scholarly essays in this book, which is published to detail the basis of the exhibition and examine interpretations of the artistic use of gold during the Middles Ages and in twentieth- and twenty-first-century art. Gold backgrounds were first defined as a religious form of expression during the Art Nouveau period. This project aims to question such an interpretation of the artistic application of gold. A second-century mummy portrait begins the story. Pictures by Giandomenico Tiepolo and William Blake demonstrate the use of gold in early modern painting. Masterpieces by artists from Gustav Klimt to Willi Baumeister, and from Richard Hamilton to Imi Knoebel serve as examples of the further development of this style. This show comprises works by Stephan Balkenhol, Georg Baselitz, James Lee Byars, Christian Eckart, Luciano Fabro, Helmut Federle, Sylvie Fleury, Günther Förg, Jakob Gasteiger, General Idea, Hans Haacke, Yves Klein, Milan Kunc, Robert Kushner, Sherrie Levine, Heinz Mack, Hermann Nitsch, Oswald Oberhuber, Marc Quinn, Gerwald Rockenschaub, Lucy Skaer, Nedko Solakov, Victor Vasarely, Andy Warhol, Max Weiler, Fred Wessel, Franz West, Erwin Wurm, Toby Ziegler and others.
