Item Number: 117662 Title: Römische Kirchenfassaden des 17. Jahrhunderts : Fassadengestaltung im Kontext von Innen- und Außenraum Author: Teuscher, Jana Price: Not Available ISBN: 9783487146621 Description: Hildesheim: Olms, 2011. 21cm., pbk., 272pp., 73 illus. Summary: In 17th-century Rome, highly unusual and apparently unconventional church facades were built. These are based on the elements of classical architecture, but use them with considerably more freedom to enrich the established Italian schema for facades. But which factors influenced this heterogeneous composition? This study focuses chiefly on the facades of Santi Martina e Luca, San Carlino, Santi Vincenzo ed Anastasio and Santa Maria in Campitelli. Lucid individual analyses, distinguished by a gift for precise observation, demonstrate that the architects take up features from the structure of the adjacent spaces in the composition of the facades. Because each urban architectural context is unique and the interiors are always conceived according to different requirements, highly individual solutions were developed for the facades. Thus the church facades of the Roman Seicento are to an unusual degree a system of balance between internal and external spaces: both influence the facade, which in turn mediates between them.
