Summary: Franco Guerzoni was born in Modena, Italy, in 1948. He began his artistic career in the early 1970s, using photography as his representational medium. His series Affreschi date to 1972, followed the next year by Archeologie and Antropologie, explorations into cultural stratification and the idea of the ‘old’ as loss. In the 1980s, the artist dedicated himself to the creation of cycles of large wall maps, Carte di viaggio [Travellers’ Maps], Grotteschi [Grotesques] and La parete dimenticata [The Forgotten Wall], conceived as explorations of an imaginary geography. He ended the decade with works focused on the surface understood as depth, presenting Decorazioni e rovine [Decorations and Ruins] in a solo room at the 1990 Venice Biennale. He then continued with an investigation of time and the poetics of ruins through cycles of large works, a sort of archaeology without restoration. In 2006, following the recovery of a corpus of photographic works from the 1970s, he presented Paesaggi in polvere [Landscapes in Dust] at the GAM of Turin. Since then, his work has been accompanied by an earnest quest to reconnect with or transfer his expression from the painting to the wall itself, pursuing the dream—constant throughout Guerzoni’s oeuvre—of connecting his early attempts to create a sort of bas relief with an idea of light sculpture, offspring of his new regard for the wall. Indeed, the Parete dimenticata has become the favoured ambit for his most current work.
