Summary; This book describes the creation and main historical changes in the Giardini di Castello, in Venice - the largest and most important green area of the city - based on archival documents and maps, some of which are unpublished. This area, extending from the Viale Garibaldi to the island of Sant'Elena, has been recognised as an area of especial interest, as recognised by the Code of Cultural Heritage (Codice dei Beni Culturali). This study, carried out at the Soprintendenza per i beni architettonici e paesaggistici di Venezia, with the cooperation of students of the Universitą di Ca' Foscari and IUAV of Venice, investigates the present state of the area, seat of the annual Biennale exhibitions, and recently enhanced by the restoration of the Serra on the Viale Garibaldi.
