Title: Hollywood : Berlin/Los Angeles : A Tales of Two (Other) Cities
Author: Cernuschi, Stefano ; Chiarra Leoni (eds)
Price: Not Available
ISBN: 9788896501085
Description: Milano: Mousse, 2009. 21cm., pbk., 76pp. illus., most in color. Multi-lingual text. Exhibition held at Galleria Massimo De Carlo, Milan. Summary: In 1859, Charles Dickens published a historical novel in installments, set in Paris and London. This catalogue, which incorporates its title, presents texts by two authors—Thomas Lawson and Stefan Heideinreich, who have an in-depth knowledge of the history and contemporary urban milieu of Los Angeles and Berlin, respectively—to offer a cultural and social overview of these "other" two metropolises, as opposed to the ones that the famous British writer explored. And the moods of these metropolises permeate the work of 13 young artists who are natives or temporary residents. The book illustrates the pieces in the 2009 show at Massimo De Carlo, by Frank Benson, Aaron Curry, Elad Lassry, Scott Olson, Kaari Upson, Simon Fujiwara, Klara Liden, Dan Rees, Kirstine Roepstorff, Nora Schultz, Josef Strau, Klaus Weber, and Maximilian Zentz Zlomovitz, supplementing them with pictures of the cities—taken or found by the artists—and with their biographies. The unique design, with an exposed binding, plays with the geographical differences and distinctive cultural features of the two cities, using a horizontal band over the actual cover, which incorporates eleven emblematic images.
