Summary: Doris Salcedo is an artist who explores the traces political and social violence leave in the lives of people emarginated from the social mainstream. She was already a will-known figure with the public when in 2007 she became the eighth artist Tate Modern commissioned a work for the Turbine Hall from. Plegariamuda by Doris Salcedo is a work of great visual and emotional impact, an installation of tables stacked one upside down on the other with slender blades of grass growing out of them. The repetition of the modules evokes a communal burial ground, a metaphor for the lives of a socially excluded underclass. In this work the artist is referring mainly to the victims of massacres in her native Colombia from the nineties onwards, but also to the outskirts of Los Angeles and in general to human suffering. The catalogue, curated personally by the artist in this Italian edition, contains a wealth of images of the installation that travelled through Europe before reaching the MAXXI, as well as essays by Isabel Carlos, Mieke Bal and Moacirdos Anjos.
