Summary: The cultural journey, known as the Grand Tour, has always had as its protagonist Italy, a place rich in memories of the ancient. The drawings dating from the years 1829-1831, with notes in German and of uncertain authorship, include views of Rome within the Aurelian walls, the Roman countryside, in particular, the Caffarella area along the Via Appia Antica, the Castelli Romani and a number of locations in central and southern Italy such as Pozzuoli, Terracina, Santa Marinella, Civitavecchia, Tarquinia, Tuscania, Sutri and Orvieto. Compared with the more or less contemporary images of the same places, prints by other artists or photographs, they are characterised a particular perspective accuracy and therefore they can be considered an important testimony to places, transformed over time or even vanished, before the advent of photography.
