Author: Fajt, Jiri
Price: Not Available
ISBN: 9788070561744
Description: Prague: Galerie Stredoceského kraje, 2012. 25cm., pbk., 262pp. illus., most in color. English text. Exhibition catalogue. Summary: The Czech section of the exhibition is held under the patronage of Mr David Rath, Governor of the Central Bohemian Region. The overall support of the Central Bohemian Region enabled the Czech section of the exhibition to take place in Kutná Hora, where in 1471 the Bohemia estates elected Vladislav II the first Bohemian king from the House of Jagiellon. The second most important town in the Kingdom of Bohemia, Kutná Hora became the royal treasury in the late 13th century, which also financed the generous building undertakings of Charles IV. The Jagiellonian era left visible traces in Kutná Hora, the historic sites of which will become the integral part of the exhibition project. Some will open for the first time, such as the St. Barbara Church matronea with exceptional architecture, the author of which is the royal builder Benedikt Ried. In addition, historic towns, castles, chateaus, monasteries and churches throughout the Czech Republic, which show some traces of the Jagiellonian era, are involved in the project as well as important museum and gallery collections of the Czech Republic. Up to 300 exceptional works of art from the Middle Ages, lent by institutions and private owners from the Czech Republic, Europe and overseas, will be showcased. The visitors will have an opportunity to see panel paintings, graphic art and drawings by Albrecht Dürer, Lucas Cranach the Elder, Master of the Litomerice Altarpiece and other medieval artists. In addition, richly illuminated manuscripts by the Krakow court painter Stanislaw Samostrzelnik, the Prague illuminators Valentin, Matouš, and others will be on display as well as precious charters from royal and municipal chancelleries. Wood and stone sculptures and reliefs originating in the workshops of Veit Stoss, Paul of Levoca, and Peter Vischer the Younger, and the jewels and luxurious objects will outline the lives of nobles and the art of the craftsmen at that time.
