Price: Not Available
ISBN: 9783777420363
Description: München: Hirmer, 2013. 29cm., hardcover, 448pp., 390 color illus. Catalogue of the exhibition "Jan Brueghel d.Ä in der Alten Pinakothek". Summary: The work of Jan Brueghel the Elder (1568–1625), with its varied landscapes, magnificent depictions of animals and flowers and lively genre scenes, is extraordinarily multifaceted. With 49 works painted in the artist’s own hand, the holdings of the Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen, which are unique in the world, document the varied facets of his œuvre. In addition to masterpieces such as Harbour Scene with Christ Preaching, the Large Fish Market and Madonna in a Garland of Flowers, painted in cooperation with Peter Paul Rubens, that are among the treasures of the Alte Pinakothek in Munich, noteworthy paintings such as the ‘Seasons’ cycle of 1616, painted together with Hendrik van Balen, are also to be found in branch galleries. The publication that accompanies this major exhibition at the Alte Pinakothek, which includes many important loans, is also a catalogue raisonné of all paintings by Jan Brueghel the Elder and his father, Pieter Bruegel the Elder, his brother, Pieter Brueghel the Younger and his son Jan Brueghel the Younger in the Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen – a total of 74 paintings, including paintings produced in the workshops. Since 2011, their painting techniques have been examined in cooperation with the Doerner Institut. The results allow an unusual look at Brueghel’s style and how he created his paintings. It has been possible to make new attributions, and a more precise chronological classification of works, including that of undated paintings, as well as a greater understanding of the painting process have been achieved, enriching the existing information we already have about this exceptional family of artists. Numerous details and pictures taken under a microscope document the rich use of colour and the fine nuances as well as the accurate, unconstrained brushwork, inviting the viewer to enjoy this unusual visual experience.
