Summary: Francesco Maria Riccardi - a noble member of the illustrious family settled in Florence since the 17th century - stood out among the most notable personalities in the vast Roman collective trend of the 1700s. The gentleman was able to interpret with great intuition the natural inclination to patronage that distinguished the members of his family throughout the years. As a matter of fact the magnificence of his lineage receives a vigorous impulse to the enrichment of the family collections of art, thanks to the initiative of Francesco Maria, and to the one of his younger brothers Vincenzo, Gabriello and Bernardino. The Riccardi family was also owner of the homonymous residence in via Larga in Florence - symbol of the rise and the social role conquered within the Florentine society and formerly owned by the Medici. A comprehensive and articulated analysis of the artistic influences that effected the family careful collection of works of art enabled us to recreate the surrounding social and artistic texture, highlighting Francesco Maria's personal taste and characteristics. Francesco Maria Riccardi heads to Rome in February of 1721, where he permanently resided until his death. The systematic study of archives traced between Rome and Florence led to a nearly complete reconstruction of the figure of this distinguished patron who - at the present state of the studies - remains almost completely unknown yet. The significant results achieved through the reading of the documents makes an interesting step forward for further observations and certainly helps to outline the biography of this character. The lists of payments in the record books detail the sums of money destined to purchase paintings or to commission several contemporary artists, including Antonio David, Giuseppe Rosi, Carlo Grandi, Giuseppe Piestrini, Giovanni Paolo Panini, Girolamo Pesci, Sebastiano Conca, Giuseppe Bottani, Gaspare Serenario, Agostino Masucci and the senese Giovanni Sorbi. The prelate turned to many craftsmen as well, including the Florentine Bartolomeo Paoletti, the watchmakers Bernardo Bernardi and Sigismondo, Giacomo Filippi "chincagliere", Federico Predellini jeweler, Bernardo Holzaman and Adriano Haffner, or the Roman Francesco Morelli, Stefano and Giovanni Battista Uslenghi, Urbano Cencini, Benedetto Salandri, Angelo Spinazzi, Giovanni Andrea Pesaroni, Andrea Valadier and the goldsmith Gaetano Gelpi.
