Item Number: 124091 Title: MASO DI BANCO in Giotto's Workshop in Naples and an Unpublished Saint Dominic Author: De Marchi, Andrea Price: Not Available ISBN: 9788870385182 Description: Firenze: Centro Di, Moretti, 2013. 32cm., hardcover, 47pp. illus., most in color. English text. Exhibition held at TEFAF, Maastricht. Summary: The panel depicting Saint Dominic is attributed to Maso di Banco, who was active in the second quarter of the 14th century, and was originally part of a buttress or pillar of an altarpiece. After extensive research, Moretti believes that it was probably painted by the young Maso di Banco in Giotto’s workshop in Naples. A number of distinguished art historians believe that the young Maso worked under Giotto there as well as in the Bardi Chapel of Santa Croce in Florence, the decoration of which was also begun by Giotto. While almost nothing is known about Maso’s career, he is regarded as the greatest of Giotto’s followers on the strength of Ghiberti’s testimony that he painted the grand and beautifully-coloured frescos illustrating the legend of St Sylvester in the Bardi Chapel. Saint Dominic is shown with his attribute, a stem of lilies, which is similar to a form found in Florence by Giotto and his immediate followers and the prototype of this representation is seen in the Santa Clara frescoes by Giotto in the Bardi Chapel, dated around 1325. The antiquity of this panel, now dated to around 1330, makes it one of the oldest extant examples of figurative buttresses for an altarpiece and therefore a very rare survival.
