Author: Cooper, Lisa H. ; Andrea Denny-Brown (eds)
Price: Not Available
ISBN: 9781409456766
Description: Aldershot: Ashgate, 2014. 25cm., hardcover, 408pp., 29 color, 29 b&w illus. Summary: The Arma Christi - the representation of the objects associated with Christ's passion - is one of the most frequently used and familiar iconographic devices of medieval and early modern Catholicism. Whilst the origin and spread of the Arma Christi has been well catalogued, and much written about its shifting theological interpretations, much less work has been done to position it within its social and cultural context. In order to provide a better insight into the range of responses and understandings of the Arma Christi, this collection of essays adopts a broad interdisciplinary approach that builds upon previous scholarship whilst offering exciting new directions for further research. Beginning with a substantial introduction that surveys previous scholarship on the Arma and outlines the latest historical developments, the ten essays that follow then provide specific case studies that position the Arma within current historical, literary and visual academic research. In particular, emphasis is placed upon the Arma as an example of material culture, exploring how the objects were represented, imagined and used in both religious and secular contexts. The collection concludes with a new critical edition of the Middle English Arma Christi poem 'O Venicle'. By taking a fresh look at the Arma Christi through the lens of material culture, a greater appreciation of its uses and meanings to medieval and early modern society - and how these shifted over time - can be gained. Cooper and Andrea Denny Brown; The Arma Christi before the Arma Christi: rhetorics of the Passion in late Antiquity and the early Middle Ages, Mary Agnes Edsall; Figure and gtround: Elene’s nails, Cynewulf’s runes, and Hrabanus Maurus’s painted poems, Seeta Chaganti; Mapping virtual pilgrimage in an early 15th-century Arma Christi roll, Richard G.
