Description: Weimar: Weimarer Verlagsgesellschaft, 2013. 28cm., hardcover, 464pp., ca. 600 illus. Exhibition catalogue. Exhibition held at Klassik Stiftung Weimar. German text. Summary: This major exhibition of outstanding works from numerous private and public collections presents the broad range of Henry van de Velde’s artistic activity from 1890 to the end of the 1930s. In the exhibition, the agile Flemish artist is presented as an influential designer of the modern era who holds an eminent place in art history. In addition to highlighting important events in his life and the multifaceted phases of his artistic production, the main of focus of the exhibition is the Gesamtkunstwerk – a concept in which every artistic detail harmonises with its surroundings. In his constant struggle to surmount the epoch of historicism, which many associated with decay, Van de Velde adhered to what he called a 'rationally-based' concept of design. Although originally trained as a painter and art theorist, he proceeded to propagate his progressive concept as a designer, architect, book artist and last but not least, a gifted public speaker and eloquent journalist. Outstanding works by fellow designers of his time, such as Peter Behrens, Victor Horta, Koloman Moser and Josef Hoffmann offer a comparative study of this 'New Style' in Germany, which Henry van de Velde encouraged at a very early stage.
