Summary: First retrospective in France dedicated to major European artist, Antwerp native Jacob Jordaens (1593-1678), this exhibition will bring together over one hundred paintings, sketches and drawings from French, European and North American collections. A major European artist, Antwerp native Jacob Jordaens (1593-1678) has never been the focus of a specific exhibition on French soil. This retrospective is a special event that will bring together over one hundred paintings, sketches and drawings from French, European and North American collections. Jordaens’ stylistic evolution made him an exemplary artist in an era marked by profound efforts towards aesthetic renewal. From late mannerism and using a light colour scale, he moved on to Caravaggio-inspired work around the 1610s and then entered the orbit of Rubens, which led him to produce dynamic art whose sculptural plasticity and resonant palette confer an intense lyricism. Continuing the tradition of great academic painting, without abandoning a register firmly rooted in popular culture, he is one of the most authentic great Flemish masters. In the eyes of all of his contemporaries, Jordaens was the most illustrious painter on the Antwerp scene after the death of Rubens in 1640 and Van Dyck the following year. His career spanned over a half century and he produced many masterpieces for civil and religious settings, including altarpieces, private devotion tables, mythological pictures, portraits and tapestry cartoons.
