Summary: Through a selection of about eighty sketches, this exhibition presents the choices made by painters at different stages of the creative process : beginning a composition, making variations of the same painting, responding to the needs of patrons or dealing with unsuccessful projects. The work, loaned by the Delacroix Museum and the Paris Ecole des Beaux-Arts, will be brought together in the workshops of one of the masters of romanticism, painter Ary Scheffer, the first occupant of the Chaptal palisade that is now the Museum of Romantics. Like almost all of his contemporaries, Scehffer studied with the celebrated elders and at the École des Beaux-Arts, where he won a sketch contest in 1817. Sketching was then an essential discipline, much like studying models or antiquity. The artists of the early 19th century, including romantics such as Delacroix, Géricault, Chassériau and Cogniet, and landscape artists who painted in open air like Valenciennes, used different methods to produce sketches that were neither simple drafts nor complete works in themselves. The modern era would consider the sketch to capture a moment of inspiration that could not be reproduced with its original impact in the final work. It’s therefore troubling to consider how it was originally considered to be a preparatory stage in the creative process. The sketch is complex, a combination of sensitivity and craft, marking a moment when the rules of the final painting are not yet firmly in place.
