Summary: In his first self-portrait Giorgio de Chirico asked himself: “Et quid amabo nisi quod aenigma est?”, thus examining, with his physical likeness, his very soul. Struck, as he was, by his recent discovery of Metaphysical Art in the autumn of 1910 in Florence, he asked himself a fundamental question regarding the course his research would take: “And what shall I love, if not that which is enigma?”. The spatial set-up of the painting is that of a “portrait at the window” of Renaissance origin, with the question engraved on a wooden frame in the forefront. Anything but rhetorical, the query seems to occupy the mental and physical space of the artist portrayed in profile with his head resting on his hand, in the same meditative pose Nietzsche took on in a famous photograph. A second, black-coloured frame defines the green sky in the background. The artist’s gaze is directed to the right, the only side of the composition that remains open. The green sky would become a key element in the conceptual and anti-natural vision of the artist’s future metaphysical painting. The work is striking, not only for its solid spatial organisation, but also for the use of various codes of reference: painting, writing, architecture and, in the imitation of Nietzsche’s pose, even photography.
