Item Number: 127650 Title: La Bella di TIZIANO in Casa Grimani Author: Navarro, Fausta ; Giulio Manieri Elia Price: Not Available ISBN: 9788831717557 Description: Venezia: Marsilio, 2013. 22cm., pbk., 109pp., 55 color illus. Exhibition held at Palazzo Grimani, Venezia. Italian text. Summary: An extraordinary event for the city and for Palazzo Grimani, built in Tusco-Roman style by the powerful Grimanis in the XVI century. The Grimani family numbered noteworthy classical art collectors and their mansion is now a museum about itself. That “Woman in the blue dress”, better known as “The Beauty” is a famous painting by Titian. The mystery, though, lies in her identity. Who is the lavishly-clad, bejeweled woman? Is she real, or ideal? Several different interpretations of her identity have been put forward by modern and ancient critics, though the most likely – especially in Anglo-Saxon scholars’ opinion – is that the painting is no real portrait of anybody, but an image of feminine idealized beauty, already present in the Venetian tradition with the broad definition of “Beautyful women”, which Titian’s genius would give a new expressive form to. The restoration by the Opificio delle Pietre Dure in Florence (Workshop of Semi-precious Stones) comprised, after a deep scientific research, a polishing and filling intervention.
