Item Number: 127943 Title: ‘At the Sign of Atlas’: the Life and Work of Joseph Moxon, a Restoration Polymath Author: Long, Derek A Price: Not Available ISBN: 9781907730306 Description: Donington: Shaun Tyas, 2013. 24cm., hardcover, 130pp. text, 64pp. color plates. Summary: Jospeh Moxon lived from 1627 to 1691. He established himself as a London printer, cartographer and maker of globes, as well as enjoying such posts as hydrographer to Charles II and membership of the Royal Society. He was well known to Pepys, Hooke, Halley and Evelyn. Moxon published some eighty books, some of great importance. His Mechanick Exercises in two volumes gave accurate accounts of working practices in the crafts of smithing, carpentry, wood-working and printing, and his books broke the silence and secrecy traditionally surrounding the work of guilds, so they are of major importance today for understanding the tools of such trades in the seventeenth century. The colour plates range from facsimile title pages and figures within the Moxon publications to many glorious photographs of surviving Moxon globes in several museums around the world. The author is a retired professor of physics who has had a life-long interest in the history of science and of tools. We regret to inform you that this title is no longer available. P.O.
