Item Number: 128766 Title: Farbenmensch-KIRCHNER Author: Kase, Oliver ; Heide Skowranek (eds) Price: Not Available ISBN: 9783422072589 Description: München: Deutscher Kunstverlag, 2014. 28cm., hardcover, 224pp., 132 color, 43 b&w illus. Exhibition held at Pinakothek der Moderne, München. German text. Summary: With its 19 works by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner (1880–1938), the Pinakothek der Moderne in Munich holds an outstanding treasure of expressionist art. In an international research project launched in 2009, they have been studied through art-technological and scientific procedures. The results are now presented in an exhibition. Aside from the Munich pictures and numerous on-loan paintings, infrared photographs, as well as original photos of his studio and sketchbooks make it possible to reconstruct the creative process of one of the most eminent German artists of the 20th century. For the first time, works hidden on the verso of paintings are shown, as well. The catalog thus provides new insights into the development process of important Kirchner paintings, such as Circus, Dancing School, and Self-Portrait as a Sick Man, and shows the intensity with which the artist tried to come to grips with color theory and luminance. Thus, this book renders accessible, in an immediate way, the quest for new approaches to color, which led to a revolution of painterly expression at the beginning of 20th century.
