Summary: Thanks to an attentive reconstruction of the documentary and literary tradition about the 8th-9th century dating of the Vatican Rooster, as well as on its position on the bell-tower of the old basilica of St. Peter, and on the grounds of a rich repertoire of iconographic representations of the city of Rome, with the ancient basilica and its belfry, the author resorts to his own observations, as emerged during restoration, to question both the Rooster’s commonly accepted dating and its function as an anemoscope to eventually put forward an alternative proposal for the date of execution of the Rooster, which should thus fall between the 14th and the 15th century.
