Item Number: 129778 Title: GIOVANNI FRANGI Sheherazade 2001-2013 Author: Matteoni, Dario ; Massimo Cecalcati Price: Not Available ISBN: 9788837098469 Description: Milano: Electa, 2013. 32cm., pbk., 59pp. illus. Exhibition held at Museo nazionale San Matteo, Pisa. Italian text. Summary: Once again, Frangi investigates the natural world. Nature is a central theme in Frangi's work. Right from the beginning, the Milanese artist has focused his attention on the study of many unique aspects of the natural world setting a peculiar frame of references that would always inspire him. While sticking to reality, he recreates a transfigured representation of it by using different means of his expressive style. In his works, the artist combines a slow approach to the natural element with a fantastic detachment from its essence. The exhibition is named after Sherazade, a log-shaped sculpture that turns into a rose, and appears as if crawling on the floor between the masterpieces displayed at the San Matteo Museum. Other snake-shaped sculptures made of foam, painted plaster or rigid polyurethane take the visitor on a back and forth tour that has no apparent continuity. In the following section, the exhibition puts on large paintings of sombre woods and underwater pieces. Elsewhere, paintings of stones are compared with a drawing on canvas of a Milanese park including a fake pond where plants reflect in it just as in a cartoon.
