Title: From the Hands of the Masters - A Private Collection
Author: Goldfarb, Hilliard
Price: Not Available
ISBN: 9780988316584
Description: Montreal: Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, 2013. 27cm., pbk., 88pp., 67 color plates. From the author's introduction: Spanning three centuries of artistic creativity, this exhibition features a selection of works that reveal artists at their most intimate – working out compositions, exploring ideas, recording sights and imagining others – and range from the immediacy of rapid sketches to the refined beauty of finished creations for presentation. The range of artists represented is matched by the diversity of their national origins, their subjects – from figural to compositional studies, from landscapes to myths and allegories – and their choices of medium. Executed in pen and ink, brush, black chalk, red chalk, white chalk, gouache and wash, these beautiful sheets comprise an outstanding testimony to connoisseurship. The Italian Renaissance and Baroque in this collection are represented by such masters as Baccio Bandinelli, Federico Barocci, Gian Lorenzo Bernini, the Cavaliere d’Arpino, il Domenichino, Paolo Farinati, Giulio Romano, il Guercino, Lelio Orsi, il Parmigianino, Piranesi, Guido Reni, Giovanni Battista and Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo, and Jacopo Zucchi, among many others. The heritage of French drawings is spectacularly displayed in works by artists like François Boucher, Pierre Brebiette, Michel II Corneille, Antoine Coypel, Charles de la Fosse, Jean-Honoré Fragonard, Jean-Baptiste Greuze, Charles Le Brun, Eustache Le Sueur, Charles-Joseph Natoire, Gabriel-Jacques de Saint-Aubin and Jacques Stella. Artists of the Dutch, Flemish and English schools are also presented, including major sheets by Abraham Bloemaert, Jan Brueghel the Elder, Matthijs Bril, Jacob Jordaens, George Romney, Hans Speckaert and Jan van der Straat.
