German text. Summary: The Tuscan-born artist Giovanni de’Vecchi (1543-1615) worked throughout his life in Rome and the surrounding area. He quickly established himself on the artistic scene there and was able to maintain his high position for over four decades. De’Vecchi received numerous commissions in Rome and was enjoyed the particular patronage of Cardinal Alessandro Farnese. De’Vecchi’s idiosyncratic style distinguishes him from other Mannerist artists and the painting of the Counter-Reformation. His qualities can be seen in the use and effect of coloration in both drawing and painting. He can rightly be counted among the leading exponents of late Mannerism, although some important works have been destroyed or remain lost. This study offers the first coherent and critical examination of de’Vecchi’s surviving drawings. Such an approach is of great interest not only due to the quality of the drawings themselves but also because only through an intensive study of the drawings can the gaps in our knowledge of the artist’s painted oeuvre.
