Item Number: 130196 Title: Questioni di famiglia : Vivere e rappresentare la famiglia oggi. Family Matters - Portraits and experiences of family today Author: Lami, Riccardo ; Franziska Nori Price: Not Available ISBN: 9788874612246 Description: Firenze: Mandragora, 2014. 25cm., hardcover, 152pp. illus. Exhibition held at Palazzo Strozzi, Firenze. Italian-English text. Summary: The bilingual catalogue presents the works of international artists that explore into the images, dynamics and structures that define the concept of family. What do we mean by this term? The concept has changed over the centuries, acting like a mirror but also as an active instrument in the transformation of society. Article 29 of the Italian Constitution states that “the family is a natural society based on marriage”, while in her essay the sociologist Chiara Saraceno says “nothing is less natural than the family”. The concept is not unequivocal and has changed over the centuries in relation to different social and geographical conditions. In recent decades, we are experiencing a further and decisive evolution of this concept. The videos, photographs and installations in the exhibition confront and deconstruct this concept, combining the autobiographical subjectivity of each artist with a search for a collective meaning, reflecting on those cultural, moral, ethical and biological ties that define and characterize a family. Debates and reflections opened in a re-definition of the image and the functioning of the family itself. The artists taking part in the exhibition prompt a reflection on two principal fronts: the representation of the family and its relational dynamics, an investigation of the image of the family and what really hides behind it. Artists: Guy Ben-Ner ; Sophie Calle ; Jim Campbell ; John Clang ; Nan Goldin ; Courtney Kessel ; Ottonella Mocellin & Nicola Pellegrini ; Trish Morrissey ; Hans Op de Beeck ; Chrischa Oswald ; Thomas Struth.
