Exhibition held at Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya, Barcelona. Catalan text. Summary: The painter Josep Tapirķ (Reus, 1836 Tangiers, 1913) was one of the most coveted watercolourists on the international art market during the second half of the nineteenth century. In 1877, three years after the death of his childhood friend Mariano Fortuny, Tapirķ left Rome, the city where both painters had shared part of their respective formative periods. The yearning to discover North African society and to portray it as faithfully as possible led him to settle in Tangiers. For over 30 years he mingled with the locals and witnessed how their traditional lifestyle was gradually eroded by the onslaught of urban transformation. Tapirķs watercolours tell us of brides, strolling players, bandits, servants... characters from his immediate surroundings rendered in a scrupulously realistic way, far removed from the idealisation characteristic of orientalist painting. One century after his death, the Museu Nacional dArt de Catalunya now presents this exhibition as a fitting homage to one of the most acknowledged painters of his time who subsequently fell into thoroughly unmerited oblivion. For the first time ever the artists best works, which are currently scattered among collections and museums over half the globe, may be contemplated together.
