ISBN: 9783777422534
Description: München: Hirmer, 2014. 30cm., hardcover, 280pp., 255 color illus. Exhibition held at Liebieghaus Skulpturensammlung, Frankfurt. German text. Summary: The Liebieghaus Skulpturensammlung highlights the fascinating tradition of (hyper)realistic sculpture in an exhibition on show from 1 October 2014 until 1 March 2015. Endeavors for verism, i.e. for an appearance as close to reality as possible, can already be observed in the 4,500-year-old sculpture of Ancient Egypt. Based on important works from national and international collections, the exhibition at the Liebieghaus explores numerous phenomena of veristic creations in presenting selected examples from Antiquity and the Middle Ages, the Renaissance period, the Baroque era, and the nineteenth century up to today’s hyperrealism. The emphasis of the presentation is on the technical means that have been used by sculptors for centuries to create a largely truthful likeness of reality suited to spellbind the viewer. Executed with the utmost realism and in color and often suggestively enriched with materials such as real hair, glass eyes, horn and ivory, as well as textiles, such extraordinarily lifelike sculptures exert an impressive, irritating, and at the same time shocking effect. The show comprises both original works and reconstructions such as that of a bust of Saint Barbara created by the wood carver Michel Erhart in Ulm in 1490 and carved, painted, and gilt after the original. This reconstruction serves to convey the results of a research project on the polychromy of late Gothic sculpture and thus offers the visitor an authentic picture of the mimetic quality of late Gothic color versions and their original impact.
