ISBN: 9788889965443
Description: Dogana: Maretti, 2013. 27cm., pbk., 119pp. illus. Exhibition held at Galleria nazionale d'arte moderna e contemporanea, Roma. Italian-English text. Summary: Valerio Rocco Orlando’s The Reverse Grand Tour project is offered as a reflection on the sense of enticing charm which, from the seventeenth century, pushed the young English and northern European aristocracy to discover the cradle of classical antiquity among the Greek and Roman monuments of Rome and Pompeii, Herculaneum and Syracuse, Paestum and Segesta. The artist takes us on a journey back in time to an era in which knowledge inevitably flowed from Italy, when the politics, culture and art of the ‘Bel Paese’ represented an essential experience of education and learning, after which one would return home with a richer soul, expanded mind and refined in one’s appearance. It was not unusual for foreign artists staying at Academies to act as chaperons to young aristocrats seeking glimpses of ancient Rome, of its remotest spots, or for the artists to offer to paint a fierce portrait or a landscape of ruins, as seen in the warm light of a mild spring afternoon. There is, therefore, a strong historical bond between the Grand Tour, the universe of foreign Academies in Rome and the collections of the Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Moderna, which was launched in 1911 when a masterpiece by Gustav Klimt, The Three Ages of Woman (1905), purchased by the State for the international exhibition organized for the Expo, found its way into the pavilion built by Bazzani. It’s a thread which Valerio Rocco Orlando has chosen to rediscover through his personal and “choral” artistic practice (Ludovico Pratesi).
