Summary: On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of World War I, the Klassik Stiftung Weimar will host an annual exhibition in 2014 which highlights the »primal catastrophe« of the 20th century and the ideological controversy which preceded it. Thematically, the exhibition will focus on Weimar from 1900 to 1918 and its particular role as a »place of German cultural identification«. Like a crucible, Weimar found itself at the centre of the aesthetic and cultural-political conflicts of the times, an age of intellectual mobilisation and nationalisation of the arts. Prominent artists and thinkers, e.g. Harry Graf Kessler, Fritz Mackensen, Henry van de Velde, Ernst von Wildenbruch, Ernst Haeckel, Rudolf Eucken and many others, all became willing (and unwilling) participants in a 'war of ideologies' in Weimar. In order to examine the various facets of this complex subject, the cultural-historic exhibition will focus on the interplay of various perspectives. It will illustrate the historic development of the arts, culture and mentality of the early 20th century with authentic works and documents of that time, e.g. paintings, graphic art, posters, photos, architectural works and sculptures, literary propaganda, public appeals and letters from the front.
