Item Number: 133310 Title: Apocalypse Now! Visionen von Schrecken und Hoffnung in der Kunst vom Mittelalter bis heute Author: Frey, Jörg (et al) Price: Not Available ISBN: 9783422072916 Description: München: Deutscher Kunstverlag, 2014. 31cm., hardcover, ca. 320pp., 200 illus., most in color. Exhibition held at Museum Pfalzgalerie Kaiserslautern. German text. Summary: Visions of an apocalypse have always captivated artists through this theme’s powerful pictorial language and its ambivalence – caught between horror and hope. Such visions have continued to enrich the history of art with insistent imagery from the Late Antiquity to the present. Over the centuries works like Albrecht Dürer’s woodcut series Apocalipsis com figuris, published in 1498, have become the paragon for pictorial representation of the apocalypse, and 20th century historical events have allowed the apocalypse to become synonymous with war and destruction. To this day the subject has lost none of its timelessness and fascination. Works from the early Middle Ages to the present are reproduced in this richly illustrated catalogue. The main emphasis is on works on paper, although not only are the classic techniques represented, but also storyboards and other forms of popular visual media, such as comic strips and graphic novels. This unusual exhibition and catalogue conception illustrates that the Biblical text in 2014 – 100 years after the beginning of World War I – is still perceived as drastic and characterized by great intensity.
