Item Number: 133555 Title: Petala aurea : Gold Sheet-work of Byzantine and Lombard Origin from the Rovati Collection Author: Sannazaro, Marco ; Caterina Giostra Price: Not Available ISBN: 9788860101563 Description: Milano: Johan & Levi, 2014. 24cm., hardcover, 240pp., 180 illus,. most in color. English text. Exhibition catalogue (Chianciano Terme). Summary: The idea behind this exhibition was to share with academics and the public at large this fascinating collection of gold artefacts, which offer a snapshot of the figurative art of the Early Medieval period and the beliefs that underpinned it, from the original perspective of minor gold craftsmanship. It is rare, at least in Italy, that a collector opens the doors to his “treasure trove”: collections are usually jealously guarded and indeed the fact of being hidden and reserved for personal enjoyment and a few friends and family members increases its value in the eyes of its owner. Making a collection public also exposes it to scrutiny, not only in terms of legal checks on purchases and possession, but also scientific evaluation, which can potentially lead to disappointing discoveries of fakes and counterfeits. Yet Professor Rovati and his family have been more than willing to submit the collection to in-depth, independent analysis, including archaeometric analysis. The exhibition and the book present the results of this research work, which nonetheless calls for further study, to offer a more complete response to the many questions that these pieces raise.
