Title: HIERONYMUS BOSCHs Erbe
Author: Pfeifer-Helke, Tobias (ed)
Price: Not Available
ISBN: 9783422072992
Description: München: Deutscher Kunstverlag, 2015. 30cm., hardcover, 200pp., 134 color illus. Exhibition held at Dresdener Residenzschloss. German text. Summary: Enthusiasm for the fantastical imagery created by the painter Hieronymus Bosch (c. 1450–1516) continues to this day. Already regarded as disturbing and fascinating during his lifetime, soon after his death Bosch’s themes rapidly gained popularity, providing inspiration for numerous followers. Hieronymus Cock’s Antwerp printmaking and publishing house, which operated on an international scale, played a key role in the dissemination of Boschian imagery throughout Europe. It was here, around 1560, that the triptych “The End of Time, Heaven and Hell”, after motifs by Bosch, was created. Today, only one remaining uncut copy from the second edition, published around 1600, is known to exist. The Dresden KupferstichKabinett recently acquired this sheet, which is on public display for the first time in the “Hieronymus Bosch - The Legacy” exhibition. Shown alongside other prints, paintings, objects of treasury art and other examples of applied arts, it illustrates the widely diverse influence of the monstrous and bizarre imagery Bosch created. He also provided the impetus for an aesthetic of the grotesque, varying from the horrific to the comic.
