Item Number: 133628 Title: Die verschollene Leda : JOSEPH HEINTZ d. Ä. Kaiserlicher Hofmaler und Augsburger Bürger Author: Krämer, Gode (et al) Price: Not Available ISBN: 9783422073050 Description: München: Deutscher Kunstverlag, 2015. 25cm., pbk., 104pp., 45 color illus. Exhibition held at Kunstsammlungen und Museen,Augsburg. German text. Summary: The book focuses on Leda and the Swan, a work on copperplate by Joseph Heintz the Elder (1564–1609), who alternately worked in Prague and Augsburg from 1589 until his death. This image is particularly sensational due to its provenance: It refers to an image, highly praised by Joachim von Sandrart, in the art collection of Emperor Rudolf II, for whom Heintz was engaged as court painter in Prague after 1591. Leda was sold in Frankfurt to the Antwerp art dealer and goldsmith Daniel de Briers in 1623, but had since been reported lost. The copperplate was recently acquired by an Augsburg art collector. The rediscovered Leda is now compared to study drawings from Vienna and Prague, as well as works from art collections and museums in Augsburg.
