Author: Mena, Manuela (et al)
Price: Not Available
ISBN: 9788484803027
Description: Madrid: Museo Nacional del Prado, 2014. 26cm., pbk., 320pp. illus. Exhibition catalogue. Spanish text. Summary: Goya (1746-1828) made his first trip to Madrid in 1763, where he settled in 1775 at the age of 29 years. He was called by Anton Raphael Mengs to collaborate in conducting cartoons for tapestries from the Royal Factory of Santa Barbara; those cartoons were the models in which the masters and officers were based to elaborate tapestries to adorn the residences of the royal family. The exhibition shows how these tapestry cartoons painted by Goya are fundamental to deepen the knowledge of the artist, to establish his specific technique, his varied resources and unique and special configuration of his models, all of which constitute the germ of his later creations. The catalog, by Manuela Mena, Chief Curator of Painting of 18th century and Goya and curator of the exhibition together with Gudrun Maurer, opens with an essay by Janis Tomlinson, director of the Museums University of Delaware, followed by an introductory text to the exhibition written by Manuela Mena. Then, the catalog is divided into eight major sections covering the complete subject of the tapestry cartoons: Hunting, Divertimentos, Social Classes, Music and Dance, Children, Dreams, The four Seasons and the Air.
