Item Number: 133733 Title: CARLES CASAGEMAS : l'artista sota el mite Author: Valles, Eduard (ed) Price: Not Available ISBN: 9788480432733 Description: Barcelona: Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya, 2014. 24cm., pbk., 268pp. illus. Exhibition catalogue. Spanish text, with English summary. Summary: A painter and man of letters, Carles Casagemas (Barcelona, 1880 – Paris, 1901) was a great friend of the young Picasso, whom he accompanied on the latter’s first trip to Paris, where Casagemas committed suicide aged only twenty. Since then, his figure has been so closely linked to Picasso’s life and work that his own oeuvre has been almost thoroughly eclipsed. The present exhibition sets out to redress this situation by bringing together, for the first time, most of his known production: a total of 38 pieces, 7 oil paintings and the rest drawings. Although he never went beyond the formative stage, in his work Casagemas presents a great variety of registers, fruit of a constant quest for originality and emotion. Scenes depicting customs and disturbing female figures contrast with the iconography of the dispossessed and of bordellos, thereby reflecting the modern artist’s aesthetic and life concerns. Casagemas began his training late in the nineteenth century and died right at the beginning of the twentieth. Even so, his figure constitutes a synthesis of a key period in the history of Catalan art. (Monografias, 2) We regret to inform you that this title is no longer available. P.O.
