Item Number: 134158 Title: MAYA ZACK : The Shabbat Room Author: Spera, Danielle Werner Hanak-Lettner Price: Not Available ISBN: 9783869845197 Description: Nürnberg: Verlag der Moderne Kunst Nürnberg, 2014. 29 x 25cm., hardcover, 112pp. illus. German-English text. Sumary: The starting point for Maya Zack’s work was Isidor Kaufmann’s “Gute Stube” (Shabbat Room) from 1899. Created for the first Jewish Museum Vienna, Kaufmann’s spatial installation – a revolutionary museum intervention – intended on the one hand to show non-Jewish audiences Shabbat as a family celebration, but also provided a nostalgic space of cultural orientation, rest and relaxation for Jews inhabiting the contradictory world of fin-de-sie`cle Vienna. The Jewish Museum Vienna still holds a few objects and a photographic document of this space, which was destroyed by the Nazis in 1938. Using both the objects and the visual material as a basis, and with the help of digital technology, Maya Zack developed a photographic, spatial installation that reenvisions and reinterprets this important, forgotten place at the turn of the century.
