Exhibition catalogue. German text. Summary: With Jacopo de’ Barbari’s huge woodcut of Venice in 1500 the “Bird’s Eye View” developed into a familiar pictorial motif in European art. It initially served rulers as a manifest expression of real or claimed power over a certain region. From the late 18th century onwards more and more strata of society discovered the view into the distance “looking down from above”: from mountain tops, elevated vantage points, from church towers or tall apartment buildings with many floors. New technical achievements - such as the hot-air balloon - or daring tower buildings - as the Eiffel Tower - and last but not least aircraft intensified this experience. Suddenly new horizons of perception became accessible which were reflected among other things in the 19th century in Impressionism and in the early 20th century in abstract art.
