English text. Summary: Less famous than the tombs of Philip the Bold and John the Fearless, the retables made for the Charterhouse of Champmol in Dijon are equally dazzling exemplars of the artistic patronage of the dukes of Burgundy. Executed between 1390 and 1399 by two Flemish artists, the sculptor Jacques de Baerze and painter Melchior Broederlam, the Retables of the Crucifixion and Saints and Martyrs both shimmer with the splendour of their gilded surfaces embellished by countless punched motifs and refined painted decorations. Comprehensive restoration carried out between 2011 and 2013 has reinstated their beauty. The knowledge gained during earlier studies of Broederlam’s painted panels in the Retable of the Crucifixion has been significantly extended by new scientific imagery, identification of the different types of wood used and analysis of the polychromy of the sculptures. This book tells the fascinating account of this restoration which, founded on a cohesive multi-disciplinary approach, has resulted in a better understanding of the commission, creation and history of these two altarpieces, as beautiful as they are complex.
