Spanish text. Summary: Luis Menéndez Pidal was one of the most active protagonists of reconstruction of national monuments during the Franco years. He was named “Architect in Charge of the Preservation of Monuments” under the authority of the Protection Service of the National Artistic Heritage in the First Zone: Asturias, León, Zamora, La Coruña, Lugo, Orense y Pontevedra. His work extended from the early projects in the 1920´s until the very last year of the Franco regime in 1975. His achievements in restoration of monuments are manifested over a great part of Spain, focusing mainly in Asturias where he was born. The evolution of his work principles and his thought constituted an incomparable example for understanding the architectural restoration of that period in Spain. From the first years of Menéndez-Pidal’s professional career until the last moments of the Franco Era, the social, cultural and political conditions caused unique methods of restoration that were distinct from the rest of Europe. The chronological limit of our study and this restoration model ended with the arrival of the democratic period and during the formation of the Autonomous Regions. In Menéndez-Pidal´s years there were new theories on renovation as well as evolution of principles and methodological changes. The devastating effects of the Civil War (1936-39) created a significant impact on the modification of the restoration concepts of National Heritage. More than fifty years of architectural restoration in Spain were replete with significant changes that coincided with Menéndez-Pidal’s professional career and were reflected in much of his labour. The study of Menéndez-Pidal’s work is an invaluable model introducing us to the restoration of monuments of that period and to the foundations of its theoretical and methodological evolution.
