Summary: The inspiration for the Obeliscus Pamphilius (1650) was the reshaping of Rome’s architecture by Giovanni Battista Pamphilii who from 1644, as Pope Innocent X, developed the Piazza Navona with Bernini’s Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi, as a prestigious new central space. In 1649 an obelisk, over 16 metres high and covered in hieroglyphic inscriptions, was set up above the Fountain of the Four Rivers. Kirchner was directly involved as an expert advisor in the restoration, transportation and erection of this obelisk. The work which he published in the following year examines the monument as an exemplary source for the study of Egyptian language and civilisation. The book was a huge success, which encouraged Kircher to publish shortly afterwards the summation of his researches into egyptology and the philosophy of religion, Oedipus Aegyptiacus.
