Summary: In 1982, moving the archive of the De Paoli family of Porciorasco to the Rural Museum of Cassego (Eastern Ligurian Apennines), an herbal manuscript dated 1598 emerged. This document, reprinted here, was analysed in all its aspects: the materials (paper, inks and pigments), the subjects, the kind of plants represented, the iconographical models, the archival context, formulating hypothesis on the circulation of naturalistic knowledge in the area where it was found and used between the late XVIth to the XIXth century. As for the iconographical sources, the models were both manuscripts and printed books, from the medical-botanical tradition (Ortus Sanitatis and Tractatus de virtutibus herbarum). At a first look the herbal looks like a pocket size drawing notebook on which at least two authors drew and other hands added notes. This study underlines the importance of the document in the production of botanical manuscripts in both the region and chronology under investigation, a particular object among herbal manuscripts situated between the medieval herbal manuscript tradition and printed botanical iconography.
